Huntingdonshire Senior Cup Final (at Eynesbury Rovers FC)

ST NEOTS TOWN     2      EATON SOCON     0

As a spectacle this Final was marred by the inclement weather that set in as the contest was about to begin. The swirling wind was joined by intermittent showers driven down the pitch making good football impossible.  Socon were proudly making their first appearance in a Senior Cup Final whilst St Neots were struggling with team selection. With Michael Amaeshike and Lewis Burgess absent through injury they were joined by team skipper Robbie Parker plus Eniola Agemoh-Davies and Neo Richard-Noel both on the bench but less than 100% fit. Then striker Rhys Thorpe broke down in the warm-up, so St Neots had to include rookies James Stainsby and Sam Okolie making his debut in the starting line-up with Charlie Bowen and youngster Jessie Obeng also recalled to the side. However, seniority prevailed so the Saints were able to contain both the weather and the unbridled enthusiasm of their opponents to retain the trophy.

The match had an explosive start with St Neots taking the lead in their first attack. Magloire Muyembe split the Socon back four on the left flank and James Stainsby fired in through the disorganised defence. Socon replied with the wind behind them setting up some spirited attacking play that had the St Neots defence under some early pressure however they failed to find the finishing touch with Charlie Bowen and Harvey Henderson in control at the back. Billy Roberts picked up a caution for bringing down Harvey Williams in full flight towards goal, and then at the other end Jake Williams tested James Goff with a sharp finish.  Alfie Turner was looking sharp in counterattacks for Socon and when he was pulled down Sam Willis was booked on the half hour. Hayden Armiger’s free kick was blocked, and St Neots then broke quickly but Sam Okolie fired over the bar. Towards the end of the first half St Neots seemed to gain control but never really tested the Socon keeper.

The second half begam like the first with St Neots assuming control and they were rewarded just eight minutes in with a second goal. A neat move down the left saw Kwadwo-Bugyei-Kyei feed Myembe on the flank and his cross found Sam Okolie at the far post to increase the lead. Socon reacted with three substitutions and a move towards a more attacking approach and for a while St Neots were happy to sit back and play keep-ball. With the weather now a more dominant feature, play became ragged and they were few direct attempts on either goal although on quick breaks Williams shot wide and Okolie headed over the bar. St Neots kept a tight rein in midfield with Muyembe and Andrian Ankrah running the show and plucky Socon could not find a significant finish to their attacking play. Along with the post-match medals presentation St Neots Chairman Barry Cavilla and Socon Secretary Neville Cooper received their long service rewards from Hunts County President Maurice Armstrong.
