THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE – WEST DIVISION

CAMBRIDGE CITY U18     1      ST NEOTS TOWN U18      1

St Neots Town U18 side maintained their fragile unbeaten league record with an away point at Cambridge City despite having to play the final half hour with ten men after skipper Charlie Clark had been dismissed when he picked up a second yellow card.   They then had to mount a rear-guard action to repel the wave of home side attacks but conceded as equalising goal ten minutes from time.  It was their second successive draw after opening the defence of their league title with a victory.

The opening half hour was very even with few serious attempts on goal as both defences dominated.   The home side could have taken the lead in their first attack after ten minutes but with only the keeper to beat Ismail Sanneh skied his effort high over the bar.  Cambridge then had to reorganise when central defender Tom Goddard was helped off injured with Ross McVey substituting.   Otherwise, there was little of note until St Neots took the lead after 28 minutes when Joe Jackson reacted swiftly to fire home after the Cambridge defence failed to clear a left wing cross.   Visiting keeper Alex Bent had to save full length six minutes later from McVey but that was the best attack for the home side prior to the break.

After the break the game opened up with home keeper Caleb Chandler saving well from a lengthy effort by substitute Jaiden Bell and then a shot from Ryan Samupita was spilled by the keeper, but a defender was on hand to clear.   At the other end Alfie Lee tested the visiting keeper but the sending off changed the pattern of the match.   Cambridge dominated possession for a spell but the only time they threatened the visiting goal, Alex Bent left his area to clear.  However, with ten minutes left from a corner Ed Tassell claimed the equalising goal, but that was as it good as it got for the home side against their ten opponents.
